A gema do ovo serve como fonte de alimento para o pintinho durante a incubação, já que não está ligado ao organismo da mãe, como os mamíferos.
Alguns dias antes de o pintinho sair do ovo, a gema é absorvida pela cavidade abdominal (umbigo) e mnterá o pintinho alimentado por cerca de 24 a 36 horas após o nascimento.
Por isso, se a galinha não sair do ninho ou não levá-los para ciscar nos primeiros dias, não há problema algum, o filhote terá essa reserva para sobreviver.
